8th International Conference on the Roman Danubian Provinces
Cultural Exchange across the Danubian Provinces
Udine/Aquileia · 12-17 October 2026
The conference Cultural exchange across the Danubian provinces has been organised by the Laboratorio di Epigrafia greca e latina at the Dipartimento di studi umanistici e del patrimonio culturale of the Università degli Studi di Udine, and by the Società Friulana di Archeologia, in collaboration with the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cividale and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Aquileia, with the support of Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, Fondazione Friuli and Fondazione Aquileia.
It is part of a series of conferences launched in 2009 by the Laboratorio di studi e ricerche sulle Antiche province danubiane at the Università degli Studi di Ferrara, which have been held every two years in the major cities of those regions of Eastern Europe that today correspond to the ancient complex of the Roman provinces of Illyricum.
In ancient times, the regions along the Danube were a veritable melting pot of peoples and cultures, open to influences from the Adriatic, the Aegean, the Black Sea, and inland areas. They were the scene of movements of peoples and ideas, of ferment to which the Roman conquest gave a more unified character for a few centuries through the establishment of the vast provincial complex of Illyricum.
It is precisely this period that will be the focus of most of the papers to be presented at the conference, which will examine settlement patterns and communication networks, historical and social dynamics, military aspects, religious influences, cultural models and exchanges, as well as forms of economy, production, and trade. These topics will be the subject of in-depth analysis and discussion during the conference by numerous scholars from Italian and European universities and cultural institutions, who will highlight the results of the latest research.
